The beach at the end of 8th street

If you follow 8th street past 5th avenue to the end, there is a large reclining Chac-Mool statue guarding the beach.

Chac Mool is the Mayan deity of water, the original of this statue can be found at Xichen Itza.

On the other side of the entrance, there is a beach club where you can rent not only a deck chair, but a full sofa bed complete with umbrella and coffee table. The waiters will bring you almost any alcoholic delight you can imagine, in large balloon glasses with little umbrellas, and you can sit gazing at the Caribbean sea, Mai Tai in hand, the latest thriller at your side, while wandering Mariachi bands serenade you.
Or you can have a massage at a table swathed with filmy white curtains, the sound of the waves in the background and a gentle sea breeze blowing while an experienced masseur kneads those knots from your shoulders, and all for $20 an hour.
Do I need to I remind you again why I’m here?
