The Mexican Mobile Library

Over at the Plaza Maya there are several booths stacked with pre-loved books which form part of the Mobile Mexican Library. I’m not sure but I think it’s a private enterprise, to encourage people to read without having to deal with the high cost of books here. It’s open for business every Sunday between 2 and 7, and as I was over there to see a movie, I timed it perfectly. All I had to do was leave my name and email address.

There were quite a few in English, and I brought home 3, of which I have already finished 2, so I’m looking forward to going back on Sunday for my next fix. I’m currently engrossed in James A Michener’s The Source, which I loved when I read it 20 years or so ago.

I’m hoping this is a permanent feature at Plaza Maya, because I’m used to devouring several books every time I visited my local library at home. I had a nice fat volume I’d bought specially for my trip, but as I was packing and repacking and testing suitcases, it seemed to find itself in the suitcase which DIDN’T come with me - along with a few other things which were meant to come but magically escaped the final pack. Oh well, next time..

I don’t yet have my card from the local library as I need to have someone vouch for me and I haven’t yet asked someone. I’m hoping that the cook from the café I go to often will do it, the library is only about 50m away from the café so it’s more convenient than asking someone who lives blocks away and has to make a special trip.

So, one of the “prices” of coming to visit me will be to bring books, pre-loved is fine, as I’d like to build up my own collection and hopefully swap them with my visitors. That way we will all have something new to read.
PS The other “prices” at this point are spices which I can’t get here, and flat sheets cos I don’t like fitted ones but you can only buy them in sets here. Might go up to Cancun on the weekend to see what they have there.
